The chaos surrounding Brett Murray’s exhibition at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg was mostly directed around one painting ‘The Spear’ depicting (shall we say) an exposed president Jacob Zuma. There was such an uproar and I felt I needed to show some support for Brett Murray and the arts in SA in general. Controversial themes will always be met with a lot of emotion and I wanted to ‘soften the blow’ as it were.
In St.Georges Mall (in Cape Town where I’m based) there is a sculpture that Murray also did called ‘Africa’. It was also disliked when first presented but is now one of Cape Town’s iconic pieces and a favourite of many locals. I wanted to remind people of the cycle art takes sometimes and putting beanies on the Bart Simpson heads was a way of showing warmth and love to everyone in SA expressing themselves in their own way.
